National Human Rights Day

December 10, 1941 the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and now each year on the same day we commemorate this day as Human Rights Day. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights outlined a broad set of rights and freedoms that all people are entitled too. These rights are guaranteed to all individuals regardless of their nationality, place of residence, gender identity, national or ethnic origin, religious beliefs, or language spoken. While this declaration is not binding, it has been the inspiration for many nations to adopt a similar doctrine that is binding within their respective nations. There is a similar doctrine used for leasing apartments within the United States: The Federal Fair Housing Act. Under the Fair Housing Act individual’s rights are protected and they cannot be discriminated against based on their race/color, national origin, religion, sex/gender, familial status, or disability.
